gapping과 non-gapping 해석이 모두 가능한 ambiguous 문장에서 통사적으로 간단한 non-gapping 해석이 훨씬 더 자연스럽게 이루어진다. 하지만 Hoeks et al. (2009)에 따르면, prosodic and pragmatic 요소가 이러한 non-gapping 해석에 대한 선호도를 significant하게 줄일 수 있다고 한다. 이들은 off-line 실험과 on-line 실험을 통하여 prosodic and pragmatic 요소가 문장의 ambiguity 해결에 중요한 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여 주었다.

사실 이러한 연구 결과는 꽤 많이 나와있다. 이 논문에서 주목할 만한 점은 prosodic한 요소보다는 pragmatic한 요소가 더욱 큰 영향력을 지녔다는 점정도인 것 같다. 그리고 또 한 가지, prosodic and pragmatic 요소가 online processing에도 영향을 끼치기는 하는 것 같은데, 통사적으로 간단한 non-gapping 처리를 한 후에 gapping 해석으로 reanalysis를 하는 것인지, 이 두 가지 요소의 강력한 영향으로 non-gapping 해석 없이 바로 gapping 해석으로 처리를 하는 것인지는 잘 모르겠다고 한다. 이 것을 밝혀 보는 것도 재밌을 것 같다.
